This is primarily a freshman course. You have to do the homework to really get good at it. Over time, homework became much longer and more intense; but also easy to do because youve had so much practice at it. Coulter is intimidating at first, but he warms up eventually. He often tells funny stories about his life which made the class enjoyable

He made it very clear from the beginning that we were not friends and that made him hard to approach. I started the class with a 47% because we werent given criteria for the homework so he would give us bad grade but never tell us what to fix. Hes got a funny sense of humor but I would avoid taking him for a 100 level class

Comment:
I highly recommend avoiding this professor. The grading criteria is unclear, he's unfriendly to his students, and expects an unrealistic amount of work from a 100-level course. Unless you're actually passionate about philosophy, which few of us are considering it's a mandatory class, do yourself a favor and stay away.

If you really like philosophy and theology, this is the guy for you! He can be funny if you share his sense of humor, which I did not. He never cared enough to learn my name (but knew everyone else's, so that's nice). He also never gave feedback on any assignments even if you went to talk to him about it.

Dr. Coulter is hands-down the best professor I have had at St. Thomas thus far. Although there's a lot of readings, I have learned most in his class out of all the courses I have taken. He is always willing to help and is very approachable. His class was also very interesting because he choose interesting topics and he is extremely funny.

Dr. Coulter is one of the most caring professors I have had in all of my college years. His lectures are interesting and hilarious. It is a lot of work but in the end, it is worth the pain for the amount of knowledge you get out of this class.

Coulter's an all around beauty. Makes class fun and gets people involved in discussions and arguments and doesn't ever judge other's opinions even if they're different from his own. Also does a great job explaining all material. Lots of reading and writing is due every class period with 1 big essay but not tests. Cool guy, loves hockey and his job.

Dr. Coulter is a great professor! Lots of reading, but it's definitely manageable. He has a heavy focus on logic in the beginning, but it sets you up for success at the end of the semester. He focuses on several different philosophical topics and makes it interesting. No tests, several pop quizzes, one big paper, homework every day.

I loved Dr. Coulter, one of the best profs at UST. He's a tough grader but really makes sure you understand the material. It's ALOT of reading, but it was all super interesting so I didn't have a problem with it. I didn't get the grade I wanted but the value of what I learned was better than the grade.

Comment:
Dr. Coulter's class was the hardest class I have taken at St. Thomas. There is a lot of reading and writing. He grades very harshly without a lot of explanation. The class is very dry, and your grade comes from few things. Studying for the exams isn't helpful because he likes to make it very specific.

Comment:
Dr. Coulter is a decent professor, though sometimes he can be quite vague especially when talking about logic exercises. You will get the hang of it though. He has us write a one-page paper every week and the essays are really long, a lot of them are boring. His lectures are boring too, but he is a decent professor.

Dr. Coulter is easily the best professor i have had at St. Thomas so far. He teaches philosophy in an unbiased way, focusing on the search for the truth and pushing students to look at both sides of an argument in order to allow them to form their own opinions based in logic and reasoning. He is funny and sets clear grading criteria.

Dr. Coulter really knows what he's talking about and is a good professor. Some of the homework felt useless at times but it really helped in the long run. He is interesting to listen to and is very funny at times. Expect about 3 hours of homework per week.

While Dr. Coulter had a entertaining personality and quick wit he gives his philosophy class a abundance of "busy-work" homework. His classes are lecture heavy and are sometimes scattered making it hard to understand the topics presented. Just know what you're getting into before taking his class.

Dr. Coulter is a great professor. He makes you work for your grade and really wants to help you understand philosophical ideas. He can be very sporadic in his collection of homework, but homework is only worth 10%. He is very nice guy & super approachable in and out of class. Though really be ready to read. Readings average 9-12 pages.

Dr. Coulter is arguably the best professor I've had here at UST. Very challenging both in grading and the ideas he presents to you, but you leave every class period smarter than you were 100 minutes earlier. Don't take him if you're looking for an easy A in Phil, but do take him if you're willing to get an A- or B+ but be blown away every day.
