Very vague directions for the final paper. She gave little to no help when asked for clarity on assignments. I asked her 3 questions in an email and received a response that was only 5 words long and did not answer my questions. Very judgmental when speaking about her hate of specific people. What happened to treating people with positive regard?

Maria is HARD which is part of what makes her an amazing teacher. Many students were upset that they didn't earn an A for failing to learn, analyze, and apply the material. This is college, after all, and I am so grateful that my money was spent on at least 1 class that challenged and inspired me. Hess is a true role model.

Extremely opinionated and subjective. She claims this is an intro to grad school? Doesn't that mean you use your mind and apply information you have learned? With her you better stick to her opinions and her lectures ONLY. Do not apply anything else you know or have learned in any other classes. I learned nothing about abnormal psy. All obj relati

Maria is very subjective and difficult as a grader. As some have pointed out, she can turn against individuals that she does not like. I call her the queen of mixed messages she can be so unclear. And her requirements for self disclosure are intrusive and unethical.

I wouldnt recommned taking abormal with her....take w/ Brassington. Hear he's way easier!

Maria is the BEST prof. at SSU. I feel like the only knowledge I'm graduating with is from her classes. I had 425 and 428 with her and loved both classes! Yes, they are extremely difficult so do not take her if you dont plan on working hard. If you want amazing experiences toward grad. school and a career TAKE HER.

This teacher is the most amazing teacher I have ever had in my life! I heard horror stories about her and this class but what I had heard was completely disproved after taking this class. She is extremely clear, and as long as you go in with an open mind and a want to learn you will love this class. I highly recommend!

This class was pretty cool. I like Maria she's very helpful. I would definately take other classes with her, but she is challenging. This class was very different than what I expected. But if you are interested in being a counselor I highly recommend it. She definately cares about her students. She tries to get to know you as much as possible.

This is the best instructor at SSU! She is generous with her knowledge, and passionate about helping students learn in a deep and meaningful way. In other words, she is the opposite of all of the other PSY teachers at SSU. If you feel like your PSY education has been lacking, take Hess's classes.

Amazing professor - one of the best I've had. Not an easy grader - you have to work for it, but you learn a lot in the process. My writing has really improved from her classes as well as my knowledge in psychology. I highly recommend her Intro to Counseling as well as Depth Psych. I am taking abnormal next semester and looking forward to it.

one of the worst teachers at ssu, too opinionated. sure, she's funny, but it's all about her own agenda. tons of students complain. be passive and agree with her and you'll do fine.

Counseling is better with Hess than Brassington, on this there is 100% consensus. Easy class, & do peer counseling in library 3 times a week. However, Hess is moody, inconsistent, unprofessional. Unclear, then glares at you if you ask for clarity. Tho she can show warmth and empathy, she can turn against the most well-meaning student. Beware!

Syllabus is misleading! The entire lecture is on object relations theory, that your life is determined by age 3, and essay exams are on the confusing lecture. Do NOT buy the text, just read the "optional" St Clair book, parts on Winnicott and Mahler, for the final paper. Sorry, you won't learn abnormal psy from any viewpoint except neo-Freudian.

Hess lectures in circles, there is no format to the class other then regurgitating word for word her babble of information. she must always be right and although she has a good sense of humor, she is teaches in such a disorganized way that unless you spit out exactly what she wants to hear, youre screwed. dont recommend.

Hess lectures super fast, contradicts herself, assigns tons of work. She loves to drop grades if you're late once. Tests are subjective essays, and she grades hard if you don't think exactly like her. She takes personal issues out on students. In abn-speak, she's immature level of ego strength. Never met anyone who got an A, and I'm an A student.

I loved this class! It's engaging, and draining at the same time. Most of the topics are overwhelming, but they are worth learning. At the end of the class, I was amazed at how all the information came together. It wasn't as hard as I thought either. Go to class and study the study guides for tests!

Maria Hess is the best that the Sonoma State Psychology Department has to offer. She is a true asset, and anyone able to take her should consider themselves fortunate. She is an insatiable source of wisdom and knows mental health better than anyone I've ever met.
