Professor Karl is genuinely a good professor. She is knowledgeable and a good lecturer. She's definitely one of the hardest graders I've ever seen. I got a C- for my first essay. But when I talked with her about it, she was really nice and gave great feedbacks. While I did got better grades later on and she offered Extra Credits, I P/F the course.

Karl knows EVERYTHING about Chinese History and Mao. Her passion is admirable. Lectures and readings are plenty and essential. Serious attention and time are required to comprehend the topics and write the 4 5-page papers. Don't take if you won't be able to invest time and care. Prof is intense but also understanding. I barely passed on P/F option.

She's one of the most brilliant professors I've had at NYU. She cares about her students and is there to help you. But she is a tough grader and you really need to think for yourself in your essays. If you aren't genuinely interested in the material, don't take her. The readings are manageable and papers aren't that bad, just difficult to write.

Her China Culture and Context is probably one of the toughest Culture and Context you can choose. If you are looking for an A, you should probably consider taking another class. The most important thing about her lectures is that you have to pay attention and write down everything she says.

LOVE LOVE LOVE this professor. She is intelligent, captivating, fun yet challenging, and lighthearted yet serious! You, however, need to be relatively smart and speak up in class, or you may not love her as much as I did. It's not difficult to do well in her classes, so long as you have some interest in the material and can THINKK.

Dr. Karl is a fine, if quite demanding instructor. She affords ample opportunity for engagement with a fascinating subject. Her critical orientation, perhaps best described as possessed of both a postmodern skepticism and yet a recuperated Marxist sensitivity to the workings of capital in Chinese history, is both subtle and apt.

Tough teacher and not immediately friendly, but her lectures are non-stop rigorous thinking and ultimately her teaching style is fantastic.

she definitely knows her stuff but pretty much hates undergrads. She would stand in front of the class before it began and say negative things about some of the students to the other professor and t.a.'s. She lacks professionalism and a passion for teaching.

Karl is extremely informed but completely alienating. she acts like a know it all and takes things wayy to seriously. the class was NOT dull or boring but that's b/c it is an interesting subject, and cannot be attributed to Karl or her teachings. Good course, but snooty self-important teacher.

Karl is one of the best. She manages class discussion so that stupid remarks are ignored and thoughtful questions are explored. Yeah, she's kind of tough, but then again college isn't for retards. Her class was one of the best I have ever taken at NYU, where classes are sometimes so easy or boring that I want to kill myself.
