Comment:

Tell me why he is the director of the language department but can't teach language well?????????? Almost every lesson that I have sat through for spanish, he has already expected us to know everything. He also is strict and grades really critically. He never posts grades online so you usually have to wait till the report card to see your grades.

He frequently politicized the stories we read, and apparently believed that The Communist Manifesto was a great literary work worthy of spending an entire class talking about both it and 2 articles discussing its significance today, one of which was titled "In Praise of Marx." He also made us walk to his office in the rain to hand in our finals.

Comment:

As a current teacher myself, I am so fortunate to have taken his classes. Throughout my college career I had taken several courses that he offered. I will admit that at the time, I felt overwhelmed and frustrated at times. However, as I reflect back, he was the man who taught me all that I know today in regards to Spanish. He's an amazing prof!

Comment:

I had him for The Greatest Novel Ever and another class, both of which he is extremely passionate about. However, he doesn't change the format of the classes hardly at all, whether it is a FYS, 3000 level Spanish or the Capstone. The paper for this class was incredibly difficult, and many people did very poorly. Basically, way too hard for an FYS.

Comment:

Good person, not a great professor. The majority of class time is discussing what you read for homework and a few short presentations, not much teaching on his part. Also, conservatives beware! He is incredibly liberal, and will bring up politics in a not even remotely political class. Overall, helpful if you ask, but still extremely difficult.

The class was an absolute nightmare and fiasco!!! I was a Spanish major but after taking his class I am NEVER!! Taking Spanish again!!! He was not helpful when I went to his office hours about my research paper and only have negative feedback!!! If you are not a test taker beware!!! We had 70 definitions none were in the book we had to google them!

It's been a couple of years since I had a class with Dr. Deveny. I'll be honest - I (and 90% of my class) hated the guy. Everyone found him rude and a bit condescending. I'll tell you one thing though - one of the best Spanish teachers I ever had. Really pushed me to improve my writing. Now I look back and am very grateful for his class!

Dr. Deveny is a good teacher. He is very straight-forward about his expectations. If you do the reading, the class is really easy. If you don't do the reading, the class is still fine but the final is hard. He imposes his political views, though.

First day of class he threw so much information at me that I was shocked. He walked into the room & seemed to expect that we all knew what he was talking about. He assigned so much reading every night and it was very important to do it cause next class depended on it. He was unfriendly and I hated that class so much. I dropped it 2 weeks later.

I had Deveny for Great Works 2 - He is a terrible professor. He marks down your papers if you do not write his way or agree with his belief. He does not give you a prompt for the essay but will mark you down if he does not like your topic. He forces his beliefs on you with little back up evidence. I will never take another class with him.

He was rude, and extremely unhelpful. I had taken Spanish for four years before his class, and he made me feel as if I knew nothing and was worth nothing in his class. A lot of classmates felt similarly. My experience with him and this class was so bad I stopped taking Spanish because I didn't want to have him as a professor again.

I often wondered why they had a Spanish professor teaching CompLit. He tends to lean mostly towards Spanish literature. Definately likes papers written his way so change your style to suit after your first paper. If you don't like liberal political lectures don't take him

awesome guy - very willing to help. loves his job and wants his students to be the best they can be. Very fair in grading. His assingments are clear and his study guides are helpful. Tests are not to hard. He's funny and tries to make class fun. Take this class!!

i love dr deveny. he always makes jokes that crack me up even though no one else laughs. class wasnt boring, and he always is willing to help if you need it. extremely passionate about spanish and really loves what he does

He is an awesome professor that I enjoy working with immensely. I have worked with him throughout last summer and this year, and can say that my interest in spanish has greatly improved because of his teaching.
